Angelic Realm
A study of God's created spirit beings, their service in His plan, the rebellion of Satan and the demons, the Christian's spiritual battle, and the future role of angels in God's Kingdom.
God has created powerful spirit beings as His aides, agents, and messengers. Since man’s creation, these spirit beings, called angels in the English Bible, function as ministering spirits to help mankind attain salvation. Like man, angels have free moral agency. Although created to help God, some of them—led by Satan the devil—rebelled against God’s government, transforming themselves into demons.
The Created Spirit Realm
Before mankind was created, God brought into existence vast numbers of powerful spirit beings. Scripture presents them as existing on a higher plane than human beings for the present, while also revealing that redeemed humanity will ultimately be placed above them in authority.
The Bible gives only limited details about the many kinds and responsibilities of these beings. The English word “angel” comes from the Greek angelos, meaning messenger or agent, while the Hebrew malak carries the same basic meaning.
Scripture describes distinct classes and roles. Cherubim are associated with God's throne; seraphim are pictured with six wings; and Revelation describes twenty-four elders who appear to serve in God's heavenly court.
Angels have at times appeared in human form and repeatedly serve God's purposes in relation to mankind. They guarded Eden, participated in giving aspects of the law, brought messages, rescued Lot, ministered to Christ and rejoice when sinners repent.
Hebrews 1:14 summarizes their role as ministering spirits sent to serve those who are to inherit salvation. The lesson emphasizes their interest in God's plan for mankind and their continuing involvement in His work.
One powerful cherub, known in Latin tradition as Lucifer, rebelled against God. His vanity and jealousy led him to oppose God's government and draw one third of the angels into rebellion. These fallen angels became demons, with Satan as their leader.
Satan is described as the god of this world and the accuser of the brethren. The lesson presents his influence as operating on human thinking through the spirit in man, with the purpose of deceiving and destroying mankind's opportunity for salvation.
The Christian life therefore includes a spiritual battle. Ephesians 6 describes the need to put on the whole armor of God—truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, God's Word and prayer—in order to stand against the devil's influence.
Faithful angels are never to be worshiped, prayed to or treated as mediators. They are servants of God. Though angels are currently above man in authority, Scripture teaches that redeemed humanity will eventually judge angels.
God remains in supreme control and allows Satan only limited freedom. During Christ's future reign Satan will be removed, later released briefly, and finally restrained forever. Faithful angels will continue serving God and His greatly expanded family.
The lesson closes by stressing that the spiritual realm is far richer and more substantial than the physical world. Biblical visions use physical analogies—cities, thrones, rivers, trees, crowns, books and more—to suggest a reality of tremendous beauty, variety and complexity.
