Jesus Christ

Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Son of God and the Son of man. He was the prophesied Messiah of the Old Testament and is described throughout the New Testament as being both fully human and fully divine. As second member of the God family, He has existed from eternity as the “Word.” He divested Himself of His power and majesty and became a human being to die for the sins of all mankind as our loving and merciful Savior. He was then resurrected and ascended to heaven to become our High Priest and the head of all things to the Church. Jesus Christ shall return to establish the Kingdom of God on earth and rule as King of kings with His saints forever.
The Central Figure of God's Plan
Jesus Christ is presented as the chief cornerstone and foundation of Christianity, the focal point of both Old and New Testaments and of biblical prophecy. God's plan of redemption and salvation revolves around Him.
As the “Word of God,” Christ existed with the Father from eternity. The lesson identifies Him as the Creator through whom all things were made and as the God who interacted with the patriarchs and Israel throughout the Old Testament.
The being who became Jesus Christ is described as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the One who gave the law at Sinai, led Israel and inspired the prophets. The apostle Paul identifies the spiritual Rock that accompanied Israel as Christ.
To fulfill God's plan of salvation, Christ divested Himself of divine power and majesty and became human. As Jesus of Nazareth, He lived a sinless life, faced temptation, learned obedience through suffering and became the perfect example for mankind.
Christ's death is presented as the supreme expression of love. By willingly giving His life while humanity was still in sin, He paid the penalty for mankind and made forgiveness and the Salvation Process possible.
His resurrection after three days and three nights is described as the sign of His messiahship and one of the central events in God's plan. His resurrection demonstrates that human beings can also be resurrected to eternal life.
Following His resurrection and ascension, Christ is exalted at the right hand of God the Father. He serves as High Priest, Advocate, Intercessor and Mediator and is presented as the firstfruits and forerunner of salvation.
The lesson also emphasizes that the Father is revealed through Christ. Jesus is described as the “express image” of the Father, and His life, character and teaching reveal the Father's ways, laws, love and plan.
Jesus Christ is now the living Head of the Church and will return in power to establish the Kingdom of God on earth. Following His thousand-year rule, He will turn all things over to God the Father as God's plan moves toward the new heaven and new earth.
Who Is Jesus Christ?
Existing From Eternity
Christ existed with the Father before His human birth and is identified in John as the eternal Word of God.
Creator of All Things
The lesson identifies Christ as the One through whom the universe and human life were created.
The God Who Led Israel
Christ is identified as the God who dealt with the patriarchs, gave the law and led Israel through the wilderness.
The Sinless Sacrifice
